about

centred is a community organisation run by diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) people.

Our main activities include: publishing, community events, networking, volunteering, LGBTQ history and heritage activities, and community infrastructure.

Our work focuses on diverse LGBTQ experiences, especially where these issues intersect with experiences concerning race, gender, disability, deafness, age and minority faith. We work closely with friends, family and allies who also wish to achieve equality for all.

The centred mission is to bring about equality, respect and understanding in society particularly in relation to sexuality and gender.

Whilst our primary charitable objectives concern sexuality and gender, our working concern is equality for all. We recognise the importance of the intersectional nature of identity.

The centred purpose is to create community spaces that are affirming, celebratory and diverse with and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) communities. These spaces might be created through publishing, events, discussions and in terms of physical temporary or permanent LGBTQ community spaces.

A brief history

centred registered as a charity in 1996 under the name of Kairos in Soho. We have to this date been based in Soho and are particularly interested in the area’s diverse history and capacity to be so many things to so many different communities. Our work has a London-wide, national and international reach.

Over the past eight years centred has gradually increased its exploration of LGBTQ issues, communities and organisations across London, and also in relation to community development, voluntary and community action and the importance of space amongst the community.

What we do

Our main activities include: publishing, community events, networking, volunteering, LGBTQ history and heritage activities, and community infrastructure.

centred plans its work using what we describe as a community engagement trellis. Running through this are the themes of heritage, arts and culture, social and education and the environment. Influencing these development themes are our values, in particular our commitment to equality and diversity. In recent years we have carried out dedicated outreach and engagement to explore the LGBTQ experience in relation to race, deafness, disability and gender. centred also works across generations.

Values and belief

We believe that when groups of people begin to appreciate differences, and work through them, we create stronger and more connected communities. We therefore focus our activities at the intersections of race, sexuality, gender, disability, deafness, age and minority faith.

centred values are:

  • equality and diversity
  • integrity
  • independence
  • authenticity
  • innovation
